Head librarian of the Inyo County Free Library located in Independence, Inyo County, California between 1920 and 1949. Acted concurrently as head librarian of Mono County from 1945-1949. Anne Margrave retired from the Inyo County Free Library on 31 Jul 1949 (Mono Herald and Bridgeport Chronicle-Union newspaper, 17 Jun 1949, p. 1). Succeeded in the position by Bessie Poole.

Born in White Cloud, Kansas to missionaries Charles Theodore Margrave and Agnes Margrave on 27 Jul 1880. The family relocated to Reserve KS on the Sac and Fox Reservation by the time of her sister Eleanor Margrave's birth on 13 Dec 1883.

Name in most records up through the 1910 Census is "Anna."

Ancestry user shbelle47 contributed the following information regarding Anne's parents: "When married, lived first in Brown County, Kansas, then Richardson County, Nebraska, where they were among the first settlers. In 1885 they moved to Sheridan County Nebraska. In 1905 they were living at 304 Pine Street, Gordon, Nebraska while still owning their ranch."

Graduated from Gordon High School in Gordon, Nebraska in 1898 (Gordon Journal, 25 May 1939 p. 8). Listed as a teacher in Nebraska in 1899.

Attended Bellevue College in Bellevue, Nebraska. The Gordon Journal newspaper noted that she was the "first young lady from Gordon [Nebraska] to complete a full college course," (12 Sep 1902, p. 5). Graduated with a degree in "the Classics" in June 1903 (Gordon Journal, 5 Jun 1903, p. 5). Returned to Gordon High School where she taught Latin and acted as Vice Principal for several years.

Obituary for her father states that Anne's mother Agnes relocated to Santa Barbara in 1912 "for her health," likely moving out at the same time as daughters Anne and Eleanor.

SB obituary suggests Anne moved to Santa Barbara around 1913, where she worked as an assistant librarian. Anne passed the California State Library examination in December 1913 (Santa Barbara Daily News, 24 Dec 1913, p. 5). Listed as a resident of Santa Barbara at that time. The US Census taken in Jan 1920 shows Anne living at the Upham Hotel, Santa Barbara.

The Inyo Independent newspaper of 6 Mar 1920 (p. 1) reported that Anne had recently accepted the job of head librarian of the Inyo County Free Library (ICFL), based in Independence, Inyo, California. Anne replaced Blanche Chalfant in the position (sister of longtime Inyo Register publisher Willie Chalfant), who left to take a position at the Los Angeles Public Library. The article notes "Miss Chalfant will be succeeded here by Miss Anna M. Margrave, who comes well recommended from the Santa Barbara Library."

Her position as head librarian was ratified on 10 Mar 1920 by the Inyo Board of Supervisors (Independent, 20 Mar 1920, p. 1). Anne arrived in Independence on 14 Mar 1920, accompanied by her sister Eleanor who only came along to visit but "intends to return and make a longer stay," (Inyo Independent, 20 Mar 1920). Eleanor later worked in the same courthouse as the central branch of the Inyo Library as Deputy County Recorder. Eleanor and Anne are listed as living together in Independence by Oct 1920 (Independent, 9 Oct 1920, p. 1).

She acted in the head librarian position from 1920 to 1949. She also acted concurrently as the Mono County head librarian--directly to the north of Inyo County--from 1945 to 1949. Anne retired from both positions in 1949. Inyo Register obituary also notes she was the Superintendent of Sunday School at the Pioneer Memorial Church in Independence for 17 years.

Died at a "local hospital" in Santa Barbara on 5 Nov 1958.
