Wayne was the youngest of three children of Myrtle Mae Braund Burman and Raymond Eugene Burman. His siblings were Mildred Helen and Ross Raymond.

He married Kathyrn Jane Wilcox Sept 1, 1940. They had three children.

He fought in World War II and was a prisoner of war in Germany.
