Dr. Johnson Dies Saturday After 3-Month Illness

Dr. Thomas H. Johnson, 61, president of the Manhattan Bible college, died at 10 a.m. Saturday at his home. 1821 Laramie, following a three-month illness.

Dr. Johnson had been a resident of Manhattan since 1927. He came here from Kimberlin Heights, Tenn., where he had been dean of the Johnson Bible college. He was the first dean of the Manhattan Bible college, assuming the position from the date of establishment of the institution in the fall of 1927.

He was born April 30, 1891 in Bristol, Va. He was a member of the First Christian church, Lafayette Lodge No. 16, Oriental Commandry No. 48, Royal Arch Masons No. 14, Sertoma club and the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Johnson obtained his A. B., Th. M. and D.D. degrees from Phillips University, Enid, Okla., and his B. D. degree from the Eugene Bible University, Eugene, Ore.

He leaves his widow of the home and two sons: Dr. William P. Johnson, Slater, and Daniel T. Johnson of Highland; one daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Taylor, 1408 Laramie; his mother, Mrs. Ellen Allan, Urbana, Ill.; four sisters: Mrs. W. A. Smith, Urbana, Ill., Mrs. Pearl Compton, Cleburne, Va., Mrs. Betty Smith, Indianapolis, Ind., and Mrs. Ethel Messick, Seaford, Dela.; five brothers: Charles Johnson, Indiana, Md., Felix Johnson, Mardella Springs, Md., Arthur Johnson, Annapolis, Md., Arnold Johnson, of Delaware and Claude Johnson of New Jersey.

Funeral services for Dr. T. H. Johnson, 61-year-old president of the Manhattan Bible college, who . died Saturday, will be held at 2 p.m. today at the First Christian church.

Ministers in charge of the service will be Dean Virgil Hinds, Rev. James Carr, Rev. Leslie Kingsbury, and Rev. O. Ray Burgess. Interment will take place in Sunset cemetery.

The family requests that no flowers be sent. Those who wish may contribute to a memorial to be placed at the Bible college. The body was at the chapel in the Bible college from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday. It was at the Courser chapel until noon Wednesday after which it was taken to the church.

Dr. T. H. Johnson, Former Pastor Here, Dies In Manhattan

Word was received, here by Mrs. Myrtle Olson Saturday of the sudden death of Dr. T. H. Johnson, head of the Manhattan Bible college at Manhattan, who formerly served as pastor of the Marysville Christian church.

Dr. Johnson, who had been ill for several months following a heart attack, died at his home at 10:30 o'clock Saturday morning at the age of 61.

Beginning on January 1, 1928, Dr. Johnson came to Marysville every week end to conduct Sunday morning services, serving in that capacity for 7 ½ years. He founded the Bible college in Manhattan in-1927, and is well known throughout this section, with many close friends residing in Marysville.

Funeral services will be held for Dr. Johnson at the First Christian church in Manhattan on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be at Manhattan. According, to Mrs. Olson, the body will lie in state at the Manhattan Bible college from 10 o'clock Tuesday morning until' 9 o'clock Tuesday evening.

Surviving Dr. Johnson are his wife and three children, Dr. Wm. Pitner Johnson, Slater, Mo., the Rev. Daniel Johnson of Highland, and Dorothy, Mrs. Lloyd Taylor of Manhattan. His son-in-law, Lloyd Taylor, is a professor at the Bible college.
