Mary was the third of eleven children born to Jedediah and Margaret (Robinson) Jepson. Jedediah relocated his family from Berwick to China, Maine, in the early 1800s. A Quaker meeting house was erected on her father's land. The meeting house, still standing, is 30 x 40 feet, and called "The Pond Meeting House." Jedediah was "a well-approved minister and scholar for his time." He is buried in the small cemetery there. Mary was one of two children who moved away from China.
