Alexander M.Davidson was b.Jan 3, 1744 in Gloucester, VA. to Sarah (Ellis) Davidson (1717-1752) and Reverend Alexander M.Davidson (1715-1749). In the 1700's, many women had no rights regarding property and children. His father died when Alexander was only 4 yrs. of age and a guardian, William Sanderson Ellis (1705-1766), older brother to Sarah Ellis, young Alexander's mother, was appointed trustee and guardian to care for him and his mother, who was William's sister. Apparently, Mr. Ellis paid for Alexander's and his mother's care until his mother died in 1752, then paid for her burial near her husband. He then paid for Alexander's care until he came of age, then paid for his further education so he could become a minister. Alexander never forgot his guardian's kindness and the names of Ellis and Sanderson can be found in the Davidson descendants. His 1st wife was Anna Bridges (1746-1783), an Irish immigrant who came to America "bound out", in that she paid for her passage by working it off***.
They were married in what was then Rutherford County, N.C. He was a Baptist minister who organized the Sandy Run Baptist Church in Mooresboro, Cleveland County, North Carolina in 1777. He was also, in 1783, a Justice of the Peace in Rutherford County, N.C. He began preaching in June, 1795, being ordained at Sandy Run Baptist Church in June, 1796. He was the co-founder of Mt.Tabor Baptist Church along with Pastor Carter Tarrant and Pastor William Hickman. He was the 1st ordained minister of the church in Glasgow, Kentucky. {Information researched by Loretta Martin Murrey of Glasgow, Kentucky in 1988 for Patricia T.Peterson}. He was also Barren County's Representative to the 2nd Constitutional Convention in 1799, per City Hall Records, researched by Loretta Martin Murrey of Glasgow, Kentucky in 1988. Alexander and Anna were blessed with eleven children that I am aware of. They were born in N.C. (unless otherwise noted) as follows:
James Davidson, b.1768, VA., d.1824, TN.
John Davidson, b.1770, VA., d.1844, Ill*.
Margaret Davidson, b.1772, d.1860. m.Ruben Bostick.
Alexander Davidson, b.1773, VA. d.1841.
Hezekiah Davidson, b.1774, d.1841.
William Davidson, b.1775, d.1843.
Jesse Goodman Davidson, b.1778, d.1822.
Anne Davidson, b.1779, d.1854. m.Jesse Goodman.
Jane Davidson,** b.1780, d. ?. m.Charles Alexander Lewis.
Rachel Davidson, b.1781, VA. d.1824.
Elijah Barton Davidson, b.1783, N.C., d.1870, OR.
*John Davidson is writer's 4Xgt., grandfather.
**Jane may have been an adopted niece or stepdaughter.
Following Anna Bridge's death following the birth of Elijah Barton Davidson in Feb 1783, in North Carolina, Alexander remarried. He married Mary Ellis on Apr 28, 1783. The Ellis family was well known to the Davidsons and many Ellises had already married into the Davidson family. Sarah Ellis (1717-1752) was his mother, after all. Mary Ellis was b.Jan 8, 1762 in Richland Creek, Rowan County, North Carolina, so she was just 20 years old and taking over a household with eleven children, the youngest, baby Elijah. Nonetheless, she was now married and their union would be blessed with ten children, with their 1st one to be born the following year.
They were born as follows:
Benjamin Hazen, b.1784, d.1822
Jesse William, b.1785, d.1822
Isaac W., b.1786, d.1852
Abraham Spencer, b.1789, d.1840
The family moved to Barren County, Kentucky the latter part of 1790. A Census had been completed earlier in the year in Rutherford, North Carolina. The remaining children were born in Kentucky. They were:
Asa Ellis, b.1790, d.1884
Sarah, m.Holland, b.1796, d.1877
Elizabeth Mary, m. Thurston, b.1799, d.1848
Jacob Ellis, b.1801, d.1884
Albert Bishop, b.1813, d.1901--a twin
Allen Albert, b.1813, d.1840---a twin.
I am pretty convinced that the twins were a surprise to both Alexander and Mary, a special blessing in his later years, although twins did run in the Davidson family. He would have continued to preach at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church as long as his health permitted, but he had lived a long life and passed away at the age of 73 years, 7 months and 12 days on Aug 15, 1817. It is believed he was buried at either Mt. Tabor or Sandy Run Baptist Church cemetery.
Neither his grave nor Mary's has been found. She passed away at Glasgow, Kentucky, May 10, 1849, having been a widow for almost 32 years, spending those years with her step-children, children and grandchildren, aged 87 years. [He is the author's 5X great grandfather]
***I now believe that Anna Bridges was actually born in America and descended from Irish ancestors as other family trees and Geni web site show that her father was William Bridges, born in Virginia in 1726, died in North Carolina in 1802.
