Found in The State 16 February 2001: Services for Claudia Knowlton Finlay, 90, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 1100 Sumter St. Dean Phil Linder and the Reverend Robert Riegel will officiate and burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. Mrs. Finlay, wife of the late Edward Reed Finlay, died Thursday, February 15, 2001, after a short illness. Born in Columbia, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Augustus Barton Knowlton and Claudia Earle Knowlton. Dr. Knowlton was the Founder of The Knowlton Infirmary, now the Palmetto Baptist Medical Center, where Mrs. Finlay died. Mrs. Finlay was a life long member of Trinity Cathedral where she served as President of the Daughters of the Holy Cross and Chairman of the Trinity Bazaar. She was an originator of Trinity's Elder Members Fund, now used as an endowment at the South Carolina Episcopal Home at Still Hopes. She was also Treasurer of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) for many years where she was instrumental in developing its spay neuter clinic. Her father-in-law, The Right Reverend Kirkman Finlay, was Rector of Trinity and the first Bishop of the Diocese of Upper South Carolina and founder of the internationally known Kanuga Conference Center, Hendersonville, North Carolina. Mrs. Finlay was a member of The Junior League of Columbia, The Colonial Dames, Daughters of the American Revolution and a Founding Member of the Pine Tree Hunt Club in Columbia. Surviving are her son, Edward Reed Finlay Jr. and his wife, Lucretia of Lynchburg, Virginia; daughter Caroline Finlay Meyer and her husband, Swing of Columbia, South Carolina; and five grandchildren, Reed Finlay, Austin Meyer, Lucretia Finlay, Douglas Finlay, and Edward Meyer. A sixth grandchild, Kirkman Finlay Starring Meyer, predeceased Mrs. Finlay.
