Mary was born to Stephen King and Mrs. King. She wed Obediah Garwood in Burlington County, New Jersey on August 17, 1756, at Burlington Monthly Meeting (MM) in Burlington, New Jersey. They lived in Evesham Township and had:
1) Rebecca in 1757
2) Rachael in 1759
3) Samuel in 1762
4) Joseph in 1764

In about 1766, they moved to York County, Pennsylvania, and had:
5) John in 1768
6) Obediah in 1770
7) Elizabeth in Jul 1772
8) Mary on 16 Jun 1775
9) Tracy in 1777
10) Jesse on 4 Aug 1778

They later moved to Frederick County, Virginia; where the family was accepted into the Hopewell Monthly Meeting on July 11, 1785. In 1787, they were a part of a group of Friends (Quakers) that settled along the Monongahela River in present Brownsville, Pennsylvania. There Obediah built and operated a sawmill on his land; which was along Cox Run and near where it flows into Dunlap's (Nemacolin) Creek.

Mary's husband Obediah died in 1798 and son Jesse inherited the land and sawmill, but had obligations to Mary and his sisters. Mary and Jesse show in the 1800 census for Fayette County but the rest of the family show in Meadville, Crawford County. Sometime between the 1800 census and 1811, Mary moved to be with her family in Conneaut Township, Crawford County as she made a Will there on June 5, 1811. In her Will, she named her children Rebecca Paden, Rachel Lindsey, Joseph, Obediah, Elizabeth Mason, Mary Brooks, all of Crawford County, and son Jesse of Fayette County. This Will is listed in Will book A:183 and was proved in January 1823. Mary is believed to be buried in the Quaker Rushmore Cemetery as she was a Quaker and lived nearby. After Mary's death, most of her children moved to the area around Frey and Linesville cemeteries and are buried there.
