Larry E. Astin Jr., 41, well known Milton Junction man and father of six, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Feb. 1, in his home at 9 S. Third St., a victim of a heart attack.

Astin, active in church work, scouting and other civic activities, died at 5 p.m. shortly after returning from his job at Parker Pen Co., Janesville.

An employee of Parker Pen Co., for 23 years where he was an electrician in the maintenance department, he was well known for his interest in the youth of the community. He had served as Cubmaster and Boy Scout Master for many years in Milton Junction, and at the time of his death was an active leader in the Webelos Den of Pack 23. He was a member of the Milton Junction Methodist Church of which he was a lay leader. He has taught Sunday School for the past 21 years. He was a member of the Parker Pen Union.

Lawrence E. Astin was born in Milton Junction Feb. 18, 1924 the son of Lawrence and Charlotte Hutson Astin, and had attended schools here, graduating from Milton Union high school with the class of 1942. He was employed at Parker Pen in Janesville for a short time prior to entering the service in 1942. During his service he was taken prisoner of war during the Battle of the Bulge and was held for three months in prisons by the Germans. He was married to the former June Schmutzler, April 26, 1944, at the home of her parents, Dr. and Mrs. G. A. Schmutzler, by her grandfather, the late Rev. Lorenz Knutzen.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Daniel Joseph, in April, 1965.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, in the Milton Junction Methodist Church, Rev. Alvin Briggs officiating. Burial will be in Milton Lawns Memorial Cemetery, Janesville.
