Geneva was the daughter of Elmer O'Brien Whittington and Rosa Mae Loy Whittington. She married Jim Petersen on December 21, 1945. He was the widower of her cousin Faye. They had no children of their own but adopted and raised Faye's orphaned son from her previous husband. They owned a ranch in Sonoma County, called the Dunroamin Ranch, that was located on Chalk Hill Road.
