Irma E. Allen, 85, of Mabel died Monday, May 23, 2005, at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.

She was born April 28, 1920, to Leaetta Randall in Fillmore County near Riceford. She was baptized at home and confirmed at the Mabel Methodist Church. She attended schools in St. Paul, Mabel Grade School, Riceford School, Safford School near Burr Oak, Iowa, two years of high school in Missoula, Mont., and graduated from the Mabel High School.

She married Irvin Allen on Sept. 28, 1938, at the Locust, Iowa, parsonage. He died June 2, 2000. The couple farmed for six years before moving to Mabel. Mrs. Allen had worked for Wold-Akerman Lumber, for 10 years at Mansfield Industries in Spring Grove, a year at the Harmony bank, 10 years as a secretary at North Winneshiek School, and five years as a secretary at the Mabel High School. She was a typesetter for the Spring Grove Herald for seven years, and worked for the Mabel Record for over 25 years and for the News-Record for several more.

She was a member of the Mabel First Lutheran Church and WELCA. She was a member of the church choir and had served a term as the church council secretary. She enjoyed nature and people. She was very proud of all her grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Joyce (Mrs. LuVerne) Raaen of Mabel, and Jean Miller Noltee of Port Charlotte, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, JoAnne Fay; and a son, James Oakley Allen.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the Mabel First Lutheran Church in Mabel with the Rev. Stephen Fiksdal officiating. Burial will be in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery.
