Son of Grover Cleveland & Kate Harger Crews. His father died when he was very young, and his mother had help from many relatives with his care after that. He stayed at times with his Woodruff cousins in Walnut Cove, NC---with his Aunt Ella Crews in Richmond, Va.---with his mothers cousin, Dr. Albert Lancaster of Martinsville, Va.----at St. Anne's, an orphanage in Virginia--and with his mother & stepfather while they lived in Huron, South Dakota, then later at Hargrave Military Academy, from which he ran away. Later in life, he married Helen Jasinski, who had been a "nanny" for his boss. He met her after going to their home for dinner in Chicago, Illinois. They later moved to Brooklyn Heights, NY, where he worked for Sperry Gyroscope during World War II. During that time, the family lived on Montague Terrace in Brooklyn Heights which was right on the East River. After the war was over, they moved to Greensboro, NC, then Gibsonville, NC and then Burlington, NC, then back to Greensboro where they stayed. He retired from Western Electric after about 30 years, having ended up with the job of effiency expert.
