Joseph A. "Archie" Ballou, 88, died Saturday, February 12, 2011, in the Saint Camillus Health Center, Whitinsville, M.A.. His wife, Florence (Orechia) Ballou, died in 1999.

He is survived by a son, William E. Ballou, and his wife, Deborah, and a daughter, Sandra Beaudoin, and her husband, Raymond, both of Whitinsville, M.A.; a sister, Evelyn Van Sickle, of Nokomis, F.L.; five grandchildren, David Beaudoin of Falmouth, M.A., Elizabeth Whitney, of Whitinsville, M.A., Abigail Brinkman of Chicago, I.L., Mary Neer of East Brunswick, N.J., and William N. Ballou of Uxbridge, M.A.; and six great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Robert, and by sisters Mary Louise Gates, Alice Sousa, and Dorothy Shea.

Mr. Ballou was born September 24, 1922, in Cambridge, M.A., a son of the late Joseph M., and Mary (MacDonald) Ballou. He grew up in Lexington, M.A. where he attended school and played on the varsity hockey team. He had lived here since 1951.

For many years, Mr. Ballou was a self-employed salesman of farm and agricultural equipment, and also snack foods. He had previously worked for the International Harvester Co., at the former Blair Motors in Whitinsville, M.A., and for Heinz Farm Equipment Co.

He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of St. Peter's Church in Northbridge, M.A., and the former Northbridge Centre Community Association. An antique car enthusiast, he belonged to the Wachusett Old Car Club, and formerly served as president.
