Bailey, a longtime resident of Mobile, was a native of Emanuel County, Ga. After moving to Alabama, he was choir director of Southside and Ensley Baptist churches in Birmingham.
He joined WAPI Radio in Birmingham a studio manager and staff baritone singer. During the 1930s, he came to Mobile as manager of station WODX (now WALA).
Bailey was a Special Services Officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He then went to work for General Motors Acceptance Corp. (GMAC) for 35 years before retiring in 1970 as manager of the Mobile office.
He was a member of a number of organizations, including the Civitan, Kiwanis and Lions clubs. He was president of the Downtown Lions Club. He also served as president and board member of the Alabama State Seniors' Golf Association. At First Baptist Church of Mobile, he was a deacon and president of the Businessmen's Bible Class,
He is survived by his wife, Betty Woodham Bailey; two children, Barbara Bailey Hunt of Indonesia and Dr. John I. Bailey Jr. of Mobile; five brothers and sisters; and five grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Music Fund of First Baptist Church, 806 Government Street, Mobile, Ala., 36602.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Mobile with visitation at 10 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
