Marion G. "Jerry" Spencer (1933 - 2012)
Marion Gerald "Jerry" Spencer, 78, a retired professional engineer, passed away at home Saturday, May 5, 2012, from cancer. Service: 3 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church of Grapevine, 422 Church St., Grapevine. Interment: Grapevine Cemetery, Grapevine. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at J.E. Foust Funeral Home, 523 S. Main St., Grapevine.
Marion Gerald "Jerry" Spencer, P.E., was born Nov. 8, 1933, in rural Tarrant County near Newark and moved with his family to Diamond Hill in Fort Worth, then in 1947 to the area that became the city of Hurst. He was a proud graduate of Texas A&M University, holding a bachelor of science degree in architectural construction, and was president of Spencer Engineering, Inc., for 35 years. During his career, he designed the foundations, roof systems and structural elements of numerous projects in North Texas including Stemmons Towers and Market Hall in Dallas, Plaza Medical Hospital in Fort Worth, Tarrant County Jail, Arlington City Hall, Tarrant County Administration Building, Arlington Public Library, Fort Worth Zoo Primate House, Arlington Memorial Hospital and numerous others. Jerry was a strong supporter of historic preservation and widely respected for his knowledge of early Texas history. He was a fifth generation Texan, descending from early Texas pioneers, and he was a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas and the Sons of the American Revolution. Jerry was Grapevine's 1996 Volunteer of The Year, served as Co-Chair of GrapeFest, served on the Board of Directors for both the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce and the Grapevine Rotary Club, was a Paul Harris Fellow, served as Treasurer of Grapevine AMBUCS, and with wife Sharron chaired the Building Committee for the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce's current building. He and Sharron were recipients of the 1998 President's Award from the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Horry and Laura Belle Baker Spencer; and sister, Maybelle Gregory and husband, Albert Lyn.
Survivors: Wife of 37 years, Sharron Spencer who serves on the Grapevine City Council; sister, Verna Eldora "Dodie" Souder and husband, William D. "Bill" of Hurst; brother, James Horry "Jim" Spencer and wife, Nickie, of Dripping Springs; and numerous nieces and nephews.
