"COFFIN COLKET
The well known capitalist and railroad builder, Coffin Colket, died yesterday morning at his residence on Spring Garden street, in this city, of ossifiation of the heart. During the seventy-four years of his life, Mr. Colket was prominently identified with the Chestnut and Walnut Street Passenger Railway and the Philadelphia, Germantown and Norristown Railroad, of both of which he was president, and with very many other railway corporations, in most of which energy and success made him director or manager. He was born in Epping,. N. H., October 15, 1909, and in 1829 contracted with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company to erect bridges over the Patapsco and other streams. This was his first important railroad work, after which he entered on an uninterrupted career of construction. In 1831-32 he built the New Castle and Frenchtown and Philadelphia and Columbia roads, and then the Germantown, the Philadelphia and Trenton, the Philadelphia and Norristown, the Rensaelaer and Saratoga, and 22 miles of the Jersey Central, between Elizabeth and Sommerville. In the reorganized Jersey Central, Company, Mr. Colket was for many years a director. He next built part of the Chester Valley Railroad; in 1840 also building the extension of Jersey Central from Plainfield to Bound Brook. After this he had charge of the construction of the Blossburg and Corning road, the Tioga, Willow Street and Southwark, and Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroads, and the Troy and Champlain Canal. He was at his death also president of the Chestnut Hill Railroad and director of the City Bank, and had been at various times director of the Tioga, Chester Valley, Plymouth, Long Island, North Pennsylvania steam, and the Tenth and Eleventh, Green and Coates, and Darby street railroads, as of the Penn Township Bank, Northern Savings Fund, Tioga Improvement Company, Township Line Turnpike Company, Morris Canal Company and Tremont Coal Company."
