Samuel Daniel Calhoun was the son of William Calhoun and Elizabeth Hungerford Smith. He was born in Tipton County, Tennessee 17 August, 1834.

William Calhoun died in June 1841, and Elizabeth took her children, Samuel Daniel, William Turner, John Richard, and infant Elizabeth “Lizzie” to Texas escorted by Francis Stanton Latham, her brother-in-law who had married Elizabeth’s sister Jane Catherine Smith. Elizabeth’s father, James Norman Smith, had moved to Texas from Tipton County, Tennessee in 1840.

On 30 January, 1848, Elizabeth Hungerford Smith Calhoun married John D. Barnhill, a widower with no children, in DeWitt County, Texas. They had three daughters, Martha C. “Mattie, Sarah “Sallie”, and Lydia “Libbie”.

Elizabeth Hungerford Smith Calhoun Barnhill died in February, 1864, while her sons Samuel Daniel and John Richard were serving the Confederacy.
