John had been trying to hop a train near Viola, IL, after slipping onto the tracks, he was run over by that train. Consequently, his legs were badly mangled and had to be amputated. Shock and loss of blood ultimately caused his death. He was the son of Jarius Parker Britton and Mary Estella Dennison. At the time of his death, he was married to the former Olive Bolen. Olive and John married twice; once in 1904 an again in 1913.
