Robert J. (Bob) Welch, age 80, of Lenoir, NC, passed away Thursday, May 3, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir.
He was born February 20, 1932 in Fowlkes, Tennessee to the late Harvey L. and Alice Prather Welch. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Patricia Welch; and two brothers, Kenneth Welch and Ronnie Welch.
A veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Welch held the rank of Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force, serving as a cryptologist in the Marshall Islands and later at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Following his military service, he studied civil engineering at the University of Florida at Gainesville. At his retirement, he was a Stormwater Engineer for the City of Tampa.
A devoted husband and father, Bob loved fishing, genealogy, classical music and long drives through the Blue Ridge Mountains. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Lenoir.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Anne Hyatt Welch; one son, Jeffrey C. Welch and daughter-in-law, Shelli Welch of Lenoir; one sister, Loretta Williams of Fowlkes, TN; one brother-in-law, Duke Doolittle of Foley, Alabama; and many nieces and nephews in Tennessee, Florida, Alabama and Idaho.
A celebration of his life will be held in the Christian Life Center of First United Methodist Church on Monday, May 7, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Jamie Armstrong officiating.
Interment with military honors will be held at a future date at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to: Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, NC 28645.
