Frieda Brasher, was born on November 9, 1919 in Fullerton, Pennsylvania. Frieda Magdalena Brasher was the daughter of Michael and Sophia Klimek. As a child, Frieda was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Catasaugua, Pennsylvania and attended Fullerton Grade School and Whitehall High School, graduating in 1937. After high school, Frieda took a position with the U.S.D.A. Farm Security Administration in Norristown, PA and there continued her studies in business administration. In 1940, she moved to Washington, D.C. to work with the United States Navy Department, serving as a secretary to Admiral Nimitz. Frieda was present at President Roosevelt's declaration of war against Japan.
While in Washington, Freida met Clarence J. Brasher, whom she married on September 4, 1943. They were married 56 years and together they had nine children.
Frieda is survived by her seven sons, two daughters and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Frieda is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers and four sisters.
Music was a very important part of Frieda's life. Growing up, Freida studied piano and organ with her sister and accompanied numerous musicals, operettas, vocalists and instrumentalists. While in Washington, she studied the organ at the Catholic University of America. Upon moving to Albuquerque in 1948, she began a lifelong service as an organist for various churches, including St. Paul Lutheran Church, St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Faith Lutheran Church, St. Jude's Catholic Church and Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, retiring in 2006. Frieda was a board member of the American Guild of Organists and played for hundreds of weddings, funerals and other events. Frieda taught piano for many years.
Frieda worked full time for many years as a bookkeeper for the Central United Methodist Church and as an executive assistant at Robertson & Sons Violin Shop, and in her spare time, she was a frequent volunteer for various organizations, including the East Seal Society, the Albuquerque Public Library and the Governor Bent Elementary School library.
Frieda will lie in state on Wednesday at Daniels Family Funeral Service - Carlisle Chapel from 4:00 p.m. until to 6:00 p.m. A life-long devout Lutheran, services will be celebrated at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2010. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery where she will be buried along side her late husband, Clarence.
