NEWPORT NEWS — Mrs. Bessie Garrett Parks, 99, passed away Monday, April 17, 2000.
A native and lifelong resident of Newport News, Mrs. Parks was born March 22, 1901. She was the sixth of 10 children and also two stepchildren of Samuel Ayers and Mattie O'Brien Garrett of Buckingham County.
She was a homemaker and a dedicated mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Those who knew her frequently heard her say "I've had a good long life." Mrs. Parks was a lifelong, faithful Christian and a member of North Riverside Baptist Church. Among her many hobbies she enjoyed cooking, baking, crafting and cross stitching.
Mrs. Parks was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie C. Parks; and both of her daughters, Mildred P. Murchison and Mary P. Terry.
She is survived by three grandchildren, Wallace A. Terry Jr. of Hampton, Karen T. Rickett, and her husband, Rick, of Hampton and Johnie S. Terry, and his wife, Lisa, of Evansville, Ind.; and four great- grandchildren. Also surviving are a son-in-law, Wallace A. Terry Sr. of Hampton, and one sister, Mary G. Horne of Smithfield, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 20, at Peninsula Memorial Park by the Rev. Quentin Madden. The family will receive friends after the service at the home of Karen and Rick Rickett. Arrangements by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.
