A proud WWII Army veteran, he was with the 42nd Infantry Division, which participated in the famed Battle of the Bulge in Belgium 's Ardennes Forest and helped liberate the Dachau concentration camp. At the war's end, he was assigned occupation duty and spent 18 months in Austria, France and Germany.
In addition to his wife Elizabeth, he is survived by a son, Charles III, two sisters, Alice and Lorraine, seven stepchildren, 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
