John was the son of John and Minerva (Adams) Turnbull. His siblings were Albert Huffman (1862–1936), William Craig (1864–1947), Cynthia A (1867–____), Martin Christopher (1873–1950), Loula (1875–____), Anna C (1877–1975), Malinda Jane (1880–1974), Herman Wirth (1884–1959), and Nellie C (1887–____).

He married Drumintha Oaks about 1890 and settled in Crab Orchard, Kentucky. He and his parents, living in separate households, were in Crab Orchard in the 1900 census.

By 1910, many members of the extended Turnbull family had moved from Lincoln county, Kentucky to Lincoln county, Oklahoma. John, his wife, his daughter, and his older brother Albert were in Creek county. They had moved to Lincoln county by the 1920 census.
