John was born in Ireland to parents unknown at this time. No immigration record located but his first son James W. Latimer was born in Pennsylvania in 1842. Per Latimer family records, John married Eliza Woods January 1842 in Pennsylvania, but no Pennsylvania marriage record is found to confirm this. He and his family with three sons moved to New Castle County, Delaware before a fourth son was born there January 1848. Eliza Woods was living with John and his four sons on the 1850 census, her name given as Eliza Woods not Eliza Latimer, and listed at the very bottom of the family.

If the marriage record is correct, John and Eliza had 5 children- James, Sanuel, William, Thomas and Jane.

John worked as a woofer or warper in the James Riddle Cotton Mill his entire life. Originally in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, the mill was moved to Brandywine, New Castle County, Delaware and John moved to continue working for James Riddle.

Per his obituary he died at Riddle's Banks, New Castle County, Delaware.
