William J Groft, 86., of Hanover R. 4 died at 3:35 p.m. Tuesday at Hanover General Hospital.

He was the husband of llean Pascoe Groft. His first wife, Mildred M. Long Groft, died in 1963.

Born in Hanover, he was the son of the late Aloysius and Annie Hufnagle Groft. He retired after a lifetime of farming on Hanover R 4.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Basilica congregation, the New Oxford Social Club, the Centennial Fire Company and the McSherrystown Fish and Game Association.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by 10 children: Annie Orndorff of 926 Bonneauvilie Road, Gettysburg; Grace McSherry of 425 Locust St., Hanover; Ruth Smith of 116 Orange St., New Oxford; Caroline Murren of Hanover R. 4; George B. Groft of Hanover R. 4; Theresa Crouse of Maple Grove Mich.; Rose Shindledecker of Hanover R. 5; two stepchildren, Norman Eckard of South Franklin Street, Hanover, and John Eckard of Broadway, Hanover; 44 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Grace P. Groft of 323 High St., Hanover, and Stella Klunk of 329 High St., Hanover.

Funeral services will be at 11.15 a.m. Saturday at the Panebaker Funeral Home, 311 Broathray, Hanover, to be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at noon at Sacred Heart Catholic Basilica, Hanover R. 4, with Monsignor George Rest officiating Burial will be in Conewago Chapel Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, with prayers at 8 p.m.
