Ruth Jean (Cole) Harder was born February 22, 1926, at Ellsinore, Missouri to Thomas and Harriet (Joplin) Cole. Ruth went to be with Jesus on March 16, 2019, at the age of 93 years. She passed away at her home near Birch Tree, surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Ruth attended grade school at Lower Ten Mile School, near Grandin, Missouri and graduated from Grandin High School. She attended teacher’s college at Southeast Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Ruth was united in marriage to Noel James Harder on February 1, 1947, at Pocahontas, Arkansas. To this union, four children were born. Ruth is survived by her children, Wade Harder of Alton, Missouri, Glenda Crider (Danny), Judy Turner of Birch Tree, and Janet Hackworth of West Plains, Missouri. Ruth leaves behind six grandchildren, Aric Sanders, Jimmy Knowlen, Heather Smith, Christy Voyles (Caleb), Casey Crider, and Jennifer Haynes (Dustin). Ruth also leaves behind sixteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two nieces, Alice Vierck and Wilma Larson of St. Charles, Missouri, as well as a host of other friends and family.Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Harriet Cole; her husband, Noel Harder; her sister, Pauline Hood; her grandson, Aaron Knowlen; and a very special friend, Margie Pigg.As a child, while attending a revival at Smith Chapel, Ruth gave her heart to Jesus and was a living example of His great love. She attended New Hope Baptist Church near Grandin and later, Pioneer Baptist Church at Birch Tree; where she loved her little bible study group of ladies, “The Mother Hens” and singing in the choir.Ruth was a teacher in the one-room schools in Ellsinore and Van Buren areas in the mid and late 1940s. She was a homemaker and worked alongside her husband, Noel, farming, and logging. Her passion was raising bountiful gardens and beautiful flowers to share with her family and friends. Ruth was one of the first employees at Birch View Manor nursing home, cleaning and making life-long friends with the workers and residents.Ruth’s greatest earthly treasures were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She played a huge role in helping raise them and many of their friends also called her “Granny Ruth”.Her door and her heart were always open and everyone felt welcome at her table. No one ever went away hungry. Her love and prayers will follow us forever and she will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.Funeral services will take place Wednesday, March 20, 2019, at 1:00 P.M. in Pioneer Baptist Church, Birch Tree, Missouri with Bro. Robert Gifford officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 19, 2019, from 6-8:00 P.M. also at the church. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Birch Tree, Missouri under the direction of Yarber Mortuary, Birch Tree.
