Curtis was the son of Martha "Patty" Bailey and John Tipton who married 19 October 1848. John joined the Union Army in 1863 and was killed soon afterward in a skirmish while bringing back a group of volunteers he had recruited.

Curtis married Myra Peterson and they were parents of ten children: Gertrude, John C., Phineas, Samuel, Martha, Bessie, Lonas, Fannie, Pearl and Molly. Their son, Samuel, known as Nunny, was born without arms.

Curtis was driving a wagon when his team of horses became 'spooked' and ran away with him, each horse running on opposite sides of a tree with Curtis and his wagon crashing into the tree trunk, and he was killed.
