Herbert O. Ennen (age 90) died peacefully at his home in Bellingham on April 10, 2008 after a brief illness. Herbert was born on February 20, 1918 in Bellingham, WA. He graduated from Whatcom High School and continued his schooling and graduated from the University of Washington. During WWII he enlisted in the Coast Guard, graduating from the Academy and served as an officer in the South Pacific. In January 1942, Herbert married his childhood sweetheart Betty Hilburn in Bellingham. After the war, Herbert returned to Bellingham and joined his father Herman and brother Del in the grocery business. They opened a Thriftway grocery store on Holly St. and in later years they opened Mark-n-Pak stores in Bellingham and Lynden. The business grew and became Ennen Foods with stores in Wenatchee and Oak Harbor. Herbert retired from the grocery operations in 1997 but continued to come to the office every day until a short time before his death. Betty and he were devoted to each other and loved to travel together. They loved skiing and took many trips to Sun Valley with friends. Cruises and the time they spent in Hawaii were some of their favorites. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Bellingham Golf and Country Club (loving the lamb chops). During his life he enjoyed time spent off at the family cabin at Birch Bay, crabbing, clamming, relaxing and spending time with family, especially the annual 4th of July family picnic. He was a member of Christ the Servant Lutheran Church in Bellingham. Herbert is preceded in death by his wife Betty in 1994, parents, brother Del and sister Alma. He is survived by his children John (Shary) Ennen of Bellingham, Carol (Dennis) Sandvig of Birch Bay, grandchildren Eric (Donna) Sandvig of Bellingham, Kristen (Travis) Toms of Seattle, Kirk Ennen, Carl Ennen and Gretchen Ennen of Bellingham, great-grandchildren, Erika and Kyle Sandvig, and Julian Toms. Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Christ the Servant Lutheran Church 2600 Lakeway Dr. Bellingham, WA. Jerns Funeral Chapel entrusted with arrangements.
