MAJOR USAF
MISSING

He was the son of Frederick Brittain and Lucy M Ackers of Akron, Ohio. He married Betty J Weil, the daughter of Lloyd Weil and Grace Robinson, 24 May 1938 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. His aunt was Lucy Brittain, sister of Frederick Brittain.

He attended West High School in Akron, Ohio, and participated in the chemistry club, wrestling, and band.
He attended Kent State University in Ohio. He was a manager of a department store in Akron.

Major Brittain was knighted by the former Queen Wilhelmina of Belgium for having established an airline post-WWII which connected Holland with its colonial possessions. He is said to have flown across the Atlantic 64 times.

He married second to Marie Jose Mulders in Belgium. Together, they had one daughter, Linda Joan.

On 26 Jan 1950, USAF C-54D #42-72469 failed to arrive at Great Falls MT on a flight from Anchorage AK. The last known position was over Snag, Yukon Territory, Canada. A massive joint US-Canadian search was conducted, but the aircraft and its victims were never found. With 44 people on board this is probably the largest unresolved missing aircraft case in North America.

The crew is listed here in the virtual cemetery for C-54D #42-72469 MISSING 26 Jan 1950

Family members and interested researchers are spearheading an effort to renew the search for this aircraft.
