Joyce was the third of 8 children born to Birdeth. Her siblings were-

Barbara

Captain Robert August Espe served in WWII, US Army Air Forces, Air Transport Command, and was deployed overseas several times. Joyce had met Robert while he was stationed with the Air Transport Command at New Delhi, India. Joyce worked there as a Telephone Operator.

Upon Robert's return from WWII, he was honorably discharged. Within several months, he re-enlisted in the USAF as an MSgt at Fort Logan, Colorado.

She married Robert May 1947 in New York. He was originally from Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. She was expecting another child and was seven months pregnant at the time of her disappearance. Their toddler son, Victor Robert Espe, age twenty-three months, was also on board when the plane disappeared. Joyce was on her way to Rifle, Colorado to be with acquaintances, and in a warmer climate, for the upcoming birth of the baby.

Robert later married Mary Jo Ingram in Minden, Louisiana. He passed away October 1968.

On 26 Jan 1950, USAF C-54D #42-72469 failed to arrive at Great Falls MT on a flight from Anchorage AK. The last known position was over Snag, Yukon Territory, Canada. A massive joint US-Canadian search was conducted, but the aircraft and its victims were never found. With 44 people on board this is probably the largest unresolved missing aircraft case in North America.

The crew is listed here in the virtual cemetery for C-54D #42-72469 MISSING 26 Jan 1950
