Mildred E. Slife, 98, formerly of Navarre, passed away Monday morning, Nov. 17, 2014, at Sterling House of Canton. She was born Feb. 5, 1916, in Upper Sandusky, to Frank and Clara (Steiner) Weinandy, and was raised by the Louis Werling family. Mildred graduated from Calvert High School, then from Tiffin Business University. She worked in the offices of American Standard, Tiffin, later passed the civil service test and moved to the Massillon area where she worked as a business administrator at Massillon State Hospital for 37 years, retiring in 1974. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling to many parts of Europe and spending winters in Florida. Mildred remained independent and free-willed many years, living a rich, full life. She now rests in the presence of God. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, William C. Shafer Sr. in 1973, to whom she was married for 34 years; her second husband, Paul A. Slife, in 1998, to whom she was married for 24 years; a brother, Harold Weinandy; two sisters, Agnes Pahl and Mary Louise Krantz; and a grandson, James Michael Schafer.
Survivors include her sons, William C. (Jackie) Schafer Jr. of Tiffin and James E. (Penny) Friedricksen of Perry Township; four grandchildren, Barbara (David) Dininger, Joseph (Dina) Schafer, James (Martha) Friedricksen III and Danielle (Toby) Karyadi; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Her Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 4940 W. Tuscarawas St., Canton, with the Rev. G. David Weikart as celebrant. Calling hours will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Reed Funeral Home Canton Chapel, 705 Raff Road SW, Canton 44710. Burial will be at North Lawn Cemetery, Canton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sancta Clara Monastery, 4200 N. Market Ave., Canton, OH 44714.
