Gertrude Garrett was the 9th child of Joseph Henry Garrett (1841-1916) and Martha Ellen Brown (1846-1915). She had 7 brothers and 2 sisters. She was born in Oswego, Labette County, Kansas. At a young age, she moved with her family to Garrett, Oklahoma, a town they established. Her mother ran the post office. In 1898, Gertrude Married William Louis Brown. Together they had 9 children, all but one living to adulthood. They made their home in Texline, Dallam, Texas. Her husband worked for the railroad, and Gertrude ran a boarding house. Sadly, in 1929, Gertrude's husband died on the railroad. In 1930, she married Martin E. Monson. He was a crook and sold off all he could before skipping town. She lived in Pampa, Texas for some time before moving to Amarillo, Texas. It is here where she passed away at the age of 92. She was survived by three of her sons, Walter Leonard, Max Willard, and Robert Beverly, and one daughter, Margaret Ellen Brown Slack.
