WALTER J. KANE Jr. BURLINGTON Walter J. Kane Jr., 77, of 10 N. Champlain St. passed away Saturday, Jan 7, 2006, in Fletcher Allen Health Care after a brief illness. He was born in Burlington on April 25, 1928, the son of Walter J., Sr. and Beatrice (Graham) Kane. He will be well remembered as a driver for Benway's Cab Co., and currently with his wife, Mary, was manager of the 10 N. Champlain St. Apartments for over 14 years. He was also employed with Nordic Toyota from where he retired. Walt was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant. He served in the European Theater during World War II and, later, in the Korean Conflict. On returning from Korea, he served with the Burlington Fire Dept., during the 1950s. He enjoyed sports in his spare time including a neverwavering belief in the Boston Red Sox. Walk was a member of Howard Plante Post #782, the V.F.W., a 33rd degree member of the Burlington Masonic Lodge #100 and the Rutland Shriners Cairo Temple. He leaves his wife, Mary (Bombard) Kane of Burlington, whom he married on July 4, 1978; five sons: Walter Kane, III of Florida, Daniel Kane of Granby, Mass., Shawn Kane of Maryland, Gerald and his wife, Lisa Kane of Massachusetts. and Anthony Kane of Massachusetts; two daughters and husbands: Carole and Steve Morrisett of Virginia Beach, Va., and Janice and Michael Olson of Southwick, Mass.; three stepchildren: Lisa and husband, Kenneth Billings of South Burlington, Lori Kassiah Hayes and partner Jeff Guyette of Fairfax, and Arnold Buddy Slocum of Kentucky; 24 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; two brothers and their wives: Robert and Joan Kane of Burlington, and John and Shiela Kane of The Villages, Fla.; two sisters: Margarot Meunier and Elisabeth Johnson, both of Burlington, his brotherin-law, Jack Hassett of Hinesburg; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends, including the residents of 10 N. Champlain St., who have shown him so much kindness along with his good dog, Buddy. Walt was predeceased by his sister, Anne Marie Hassett and his stepdaughter, Linda Lee Slocum. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 8 p.m. during visiting hours from 7 to 9 p.m. in ElmwoodMeunier Funeral Chapel, 97 Elmwood Ave. Spring interment will be in New Mount Calvary Cemetery.
