Veteran of Civil War, Aged 94, Dies Following Fall
Germ Klein, Former Moro Resident, Succumbs at Granite City
Germ Klein, 94 years old, a former resident of the Moro neighborhood, died Sunday morning at Granite City.
Notwithstanding his advanced age, Mr. Klein had been in good health. Saturday afternoon he fell down the steps at his daughter’s home, where he resided, and while he suffered no apparent injury, the shock is believed to have caused his death.
Born in Holland, on August 27, 1836, he came to America when 12 years old and until a year ago resided in the Moro area. During the Civil War he served four years with the 117th Illinois Infantry. A year ago he went to Granite City to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. Lucy Bonnivar.
For may years after the Civil War Mr. Klein and Gaius Paddock, eminent Madison county historian, whose ages were nearly the same, were in close association with each other.
On Mr. Klein’s visits to Moro, after leaving, he always paid a visit to or inquired after his fiend of long standing, who resides near there.
He always prided his membership in the Grand Army of the Republic and on having fought in the Civil War. Each year on Memorial Day, to the beat of the drum and the blare of the brass band, he marched ahead of the parade, bearing the colors for whose unity he had fought so many years ago.
He leaves nine daughters, 28 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. The daughters are Mrs. W.W. Lynch of Alton, Mrs. Bonniver, Mrs. Minnie Colgan of St. Louis, Mrs. August Kasting of Glen Allen, Mo., Mrs. Carrie Rich of Jerseyville, Mrs. Jessie Cunningham of Kansas, Ill., Mrs. Nellie Botman of Edwardsville.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. from the Leahy funeral home at Granite City. Burial will be in St. Louis.
