James Mercer Salter joined the Confederate Armies May 16, 1862 at China Grove in Pike County and served until January 18,1863. While he was away, Amanda took care of their four children (at that time) and was the head of the household and the CEO of all the family business.
After the marriage of her daughter, Sarah Herrin to Jesse B. Battle on November 1, 1877 in Limestone County, Alabama; the family of James Mercer Battle and Amanda L. Battle and several of their grown children plus the younger children moved to Fannin County, Texas.
No record has been found of the move to Hunt County. Buried in this same plot with her husband is a grandson, Luther, the first born of their son James Mercer Salter, Jr., and Laura Stephens Salter.
