Whitefield, OK – Thomas Lee Mayes Jr. (Tom, T.L.) was born August 22, 1933, in Haskell, Muskogee County, OK to Ivan Bell (Harvel) & Thomas Lee Mayes Sr. and died April 29, 2012, at his home in Whitefield, Haskell County, OK. Tom attended Sequoyah and Oktaha High School. After graduation he worked for the FBI, the Muskogee Police Department and retired as a construction supervisor. He served in the U.S. Army, 1952-1955, in the Korean War attaining the rank of T-SGT and received the Korean Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. On August 23, 1982, he married Barbara "Bobbie" Beasley in Paris, TX. He was predeceased in death by his father in 1975, his mother in 1984, his son Thomas Lee Mayes III in 1985, one sister Joy Lee Mayes (1927) and two brothers, Ernest (1930) and Jack (1940). He is survived by his loving wife of the home; one son, Matthew Lee Mayes of Newport, Oregon; five brothers: Vernon Lee Mayes of Winnsboro, S.C., Lester Ray and Margie Mayes of Oktaha; A.J. and Connie Mayes of Grove, Mack and Linda Mayes of Mannford, Dan Lee Mayes of Oktaha; two sisters: Wanda L. and Thermon Hollis of Sand Springs, and Linda and George Miller of Webbers Falls, OK; two grandsons, Anthony and Jessie Mayes; one granddaughter, Cassandra Mayes, many many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Honorary pallbearers are Harry Reeder and David Turner. The family wishes to say special thanks for the care provided by the Veterans Administration and especially the wonderful care provided by Juanita, Carla, Jackie, Melinda and Pamela of Professional Home Hospice. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider a memorial gift to Disabled American Veterans or the Salvation Army. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at Fort Gibson National Cemetery with Chaplain Lisa Sowers officiating. The family entrusted services to Bradley Funeral Service of Muskogee.
