Arco Man Dies, 3 Injured in Auto Crash Last Week.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, April 9, for Gerrit Borgers, 65, of Arco, who lost his life as the result of an automobile accident last Tuesday night, April 5. The accident which occred about 3 1/2 miles west of Arco on the county road, also sent three other Arco men to the hospital.
Hospitilized after the crash were Lew Spinner, driver and owner of the car, and two other passengers, John Hagedorn and Hoe Halling. All of the men suffered extensively from injuries, cuts and abrasions about the head and face according to the Ivanhoe Times, and in addition, Halling suffered a broken leg.
Accrding to the report of Sheriff Buck Johnson who was called to the scene about midnight Tuesday, the Times states Spinner, Halling and Borgers were in the front seat.
The men were returning from Lake Benton, traveling east when the sedan left the roadway on the left side, dropped into a tichbank, narrowly missing a concrete bridge abutment. The vehicle did not overturn but rammed into the mud with terrific force.
Albert Serreyn and Alphonse DeWespelaere came by shortly after the accident occurred and noticed the tail-light of the vehicle close to the bridge abutment. They sent for help and an ambulance from Tyler came. It is believed that Borgers died instantly and all of the men were unconscious but none suffered skull fractures, according to Dr. A.L. Vadheim, Tyler.
Borgers is survived by his widow and two daughters who are at home, Marie, 19, and Marcia, 16. Three sons and a daughter also survive from a previous marriage.
