Martin Townsend was the son of Martin Townsend and Rhoda Ingham. His father and mother, Uncle Amasa Townsend (father's brother) and his wife, Aunt Phebe (his mother's sister) had left their home in Hebron, CT and moved to Cornwall Bridge in Western Conn. abt. 1755 where Martin, Jr. was born. In 1765, they journeyed by foot and with one horse up to an area of unbroken wilderness which became known as Jericho and then Hancock, Mass. He married Susanna Allen when she was 14 and he was 17 and supposedly they were the parents of 16 children with Susanna dying with the birth of the 16th at the age of 40. Martin next married Anna Gardner Niles, a widow of S. Kingston, RI. They were the parents of two children. She died in January 1814. Martin married Mercy -- who died in Sept. 1820. His 4th wife was Sally Cogswell who died in Sept 1824.About 1828, he married Jane Knowlton who outlived her husband.
