Jeremie Lynn Thiers, 36, of Roanoke and formerly of Mertzon, Texas, passed away Friday, April 13, 2012. Jeremie was born in San Angelo, Texas, December 29, 1975. He was lovingly raised by father, Ronnie Thiers, and mother, Kathy Knox Thiers. He attended Irion County High School, where he was a star running back for the Hornets football team and excelled in track, golf and basketball. Upon graduating high school in 1995, he served three years in the United States Army and three years in the United States Army Reserves. He then earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Penn State University in turf grass agronomy and worked as a golf course superintendent in Wimberley, Texas. A motor vehicle wreck in 2004 left Thiers paralyzed from the chest down. He became an accomplished wheelchair athlete, winning five medals at the 2007 National Veterans Wheelchair Games and completed the Army Ten Miler as well as many long distance hand bike treks. Jeremie volunteered his time speaking to other spinal cord injury patients and also spoke to local high school assemblies about the dangers of drinking and driving. After his injury, he worked as a Farmers' Insurance Agent in San Angelo and Eldorado, Texas, and Roanoke.
Jeremie is preceded in death by stepfather, Mark Copsey, of San Angelo, Texas; and grandparents, Polly and Otto Alfred Thiers and Robert Knox, all of San Angelo, Texas.
Jeremie is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and stepchildren Samuel and Reagan Karlen, of Roanoke; father, Ronnie Thiers and his wife, Lori, of San Angelo, Texas; mother, Kathy Knox Thiers, of San Angelo, Texas; father-in-law, Col. (Ret.) Charles R. Alexander Jr., of Arlington; and mother-in-law Col. (Ret.) Jettaka Alexander, of Richmond; sister, Kristie Gonzalez and her husband, Manuel, of Virginia Beach; brothers, Dustin Thiers, of Killeen, Texas, SSG Ryan Thiers, of Ft. Hood, Texas; stepsister, Victoria, of San Angelo, Texas; brothers-in-law, Sean Alexander, of Arlington, Aaron Alexander, of New York, N.Y., and Ryan Alexander and his wife, Hayleigh, of Springfield; grandmother, Becky Knox, of San Angelo, Texas; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins and honorary brother, Courtney McCutchen, of San Angelo, Texas.
A memorial service was held in San Angelo, Texas, and burial took place at the Thiers' family ranch in Roosevelt, Texas.
