Billy Jack "B.J." Staples was born December 18, 1929 in East St. Louis to John Leonard and Bernice VellaDora (Williams) Staples. His mother, Bernice Todd of DuQuoin, survives. He was preceded in death by his father.

He leaves children, John Staples of DuQuoin and Tina Staples of DuQuoin. Also surviving is long-time companion, Della Horton of DuQuoin.

Mr. Staples was a machine operator at Turco. He was a Catholic and a member of the American Legion, VFW, and the DAV, and was a veteran of the Korean War. He died at the age of 64 in John Cochran VA Medical Center, St. Louis.
