Roy Clayton Bly was born at Joseph Creek, the 6th of 9 children to Tony A. and Mattie Watkins Bly. The family moved to Asotin when he was 3 and he graduated from Asotin High School in 1939.

He served in World War II, joining the Army Air Corps the day after Pearl Harbor.

He married Betty Jeanne Mullarky in 1947.

After graduating from Montana State University in Missoula, he taught English in Livingston, Mont., Polson, Mont., and Ephrata, Wash., as well as coaching basketball and teaching drama.

He moved with his family to Puyallup, Wash., in 1969 and taught at Kalles Junior High for 16 years before retiring in 1985.
