Her parents were Pollie McClemden (b. Stanly Co., NC, about 1818) and Berry Thompson (born in NC about 1810).

Ellen was listed in the 1870 US Census in Union Co., NC, with her parents and siblings as: Berry Thompson, 60, Farmer; Mary, 52; Ellen, 18; David, 16; and Ebenezar, 15.

She married Willie Madison Hargett.

They are listed in the 1880 US Census in Goose Creek Township, Union County, North Carolina, as William W. Hargett, 32, Farmer; Charity E., wife 27; Adaline A., dau, 6; Mary A., dau, 3; and Rosey J., dau, 1; all born in NC.

[She was probably the C.E. Hargett, age 65, of Gastonia, NC, who made a Widow's Application for Pension in Union Co., NC, July 3, 1916, as widow of W.M. Hargett, who enlisted in Co. F., 2nd Regiment, Junior Reserved, North Carolina State Troops, in April 1864. W.M. Hargett was a pensioner on the pension roll for Union Co., NC, up to his death on 8th May 1916.]

They had five daughters:
