OGDEN, UT - Bennie Schmiett, educator, legislator, musician, age 88, passed away January 11, 2004.

Bennie was born Jan. 30, 1915 in Los Angeles, CA., to Ben and Hester Beckstead Schmiett. He married Evelyn Ashton, Aug. 6, 1939 in Roosevelt, Utah. She passed away in Sept. of 1993. He married Cleo Allen Mohlman, Jan. 15, 1994 in Orem, Utah. She passed away in April of 1997.

Bennie attended schools in Midvale, Utah and graduated from Jordan High School in 1933 where he was student body president. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1937 with a BA degree. He taught instrumental and vocal music in Uintah, Duchesne, and Jordan School Districts. He worked as an assistant manager of Leslie Ashton and Sons store in Roosevelt, Utah for 25 years. He served as the stake music director while living in Roosevelt. He was ward chorister at Holladay 12th Ward in Salt Lake City. He served on the Roosevelt City Council and was Duchesne County Democratic Party Chairman. He was a member of the Board of Trustees at Utah State University and Southern Utah State College. He was elected to the Utah House of Representatives in 1959 and to the Utah State Senate in 1961. He was appointed Orem City Manager in 1962. He was appointed Executive Director of the Utah League of Cities and Towns in 1964 and served in this capacity until he retired in 1980. He moved to St. George in 1985 where he was President and Treasurer of the Ridge Home Owners Association. He moved to Ogden until his passing.

Bennie is survived by two daughters - Linda (Terry) Allen and Leslie (Don) Smith, son-in-law, John Mickel, nine grandchildren, 10 great-grand-children, sister-in-law Ann Schmiett, seven nephews and one niece, as well as many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by two wives, daughter Wendy Mickel, son James Schmiett, granddaughter Cindy Allen, Sister Fay Dimond and brother Stanley Schmiett.

His family wants to express their gratitude to the staff at Mountain Ridge Assisted Living in South Ogden, especially Kelly, Andrea and Casey.

Funeral services will be held Thurs., January 15, 2004, 1:00 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So. State St., Murray, Utah, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Interment Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
