John lived in North Carolina and Georgia then came to Selma, Alabama in the late 1700's. He was instrumental in building that city during the 1800"s.
He was one of the first settles of Alabama, having been granted by the Government more than 16,000 acres of land in Dallas County.
His military title was attained through his fighting the Seminole Indians in Florida and Alabama. Among his many pioneering ventures was the Selma Town Land Company that laid out and started the city of Selma, Alabama.
He was the largest stockholder in the Real Estate Banking Company of South Alabama and one of the three largest stockholders of the Rome and Dalton Railroad.
He filled with great ability numerous assignments for the State of Alabama.

Married, on Tuesday last, Major John Tipton to Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, daughter of Benjamin Tarver, Senior, of Lowndes County.

John Green Tipton who was married several times, the
last to Elizabeth Tarver. John Green Tipton was born in Georgia April 3, 1798 and died in Selma Ala 20 March 1853. He had a daughter Mary Elizabeth Tipton who married John Smith Cleveland. John Smith Cleveland was the Grandson of Col Larkin Cleveland of Kings Mt. fame. John Smith Cleveland had a brother named Larkin Green Cleveland who came to Texas before 1850. I asked my 103 year old Mother where the Green came from and she said the Tipton's and Cleveland's faught under the Command of General Green during the Rev. War and they all admired him.
