Elizabeth and her twin brother Isaac were born on July 23, 1817, to Jacob Erb and Salome Graybell. The parents were among the earliest Pennsylvanian Mennonites to settle in the area of Upper Canada that would eventually become Ontario's Waterloo Region. Today, what was the Jacob Erb property is located just southwest of King Street in downtown Kitchener, Ontario.


Elizabeth married Anton Reitzel in November 1834. After their marriage, they moved to a farm located just northwest of Saint Jacobs (Woolwich Township, Lot 37, German Company Tract).

Anton and Elizabeth were the parents of 12 known chldren:

  • Isaac (1835-1896)
  • Magdalena (1837-1921)
  • Samuel (1839-1914)
  • Paulina "Polly" (1841-1895)
  • Anthony (1842-1919)
  • Elizabeth (1843-1931)
  • Maria Anna "Anna" (1846-1877)
  • Leon (1849-1920)
  • Lydia (born on August 9, 1850; died in 1853)
  • Edward (born in 1852; died the same day he was born)
  • Louis (born in 1854; died the same day he was born)
  • Catharine (1857-1955)


In her later years, Elizabeth lived with her daughter and son-in-law Magdalena and Peter Cress. Elizabeth died on July 24, 1903, the day after her 86th birthday.
