STONER, WASHINGTON HUNT
Washington Hunt Stoner, tax assessor of Victoria County, has held this office continuously since 1900, having been re-elected four times. He has lived in the county all his life, and by business and official activities has won the esteem and confidence of his fellow citizens.
He was born in Victoria County, February 1, 1864. Michael L. Stoner, his father, was a native of Kentucky; and came to Victoria County before the war, being a farmer and stock-raiser. He died in 1875. The mother was Elizabeth Hunt, a native of Georgia, who died in 1901.
Mr. Stoner, after attending the Victoria public schools, was a student in the A. & M. College at Bryan, and then took a course in Eastman's Business College at Poughkeepsie, New York. After returning to Victoria he was engaged in the cattle business with his brothers until 1895, at which time he began his official career as deputy tax collector. He was first elected to the assessor's office in 1900. He is one of the influential Democrats of the county.
