George Alphonse Keller was born on July 15, 1844, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the son of Joseph Matthias Keller and Barbara Keller née Orth. George had at least 3 sisters who survived to adulthood: Mary A. Keller, born about 1837, Elizabeth Mary ‘Lizzie’ Clark née Keller, born August 22, 1841, and Margaret Rose Streckfus née Keller, Sep/Oct. 1842 - April 1, 1885.
George A. Keller's father, Joseph Matthias Keller, was born in Amorbach, Miltenberg, Bavaria, Germany. Joseph M. Keller immigrated to the U.S.A. around 1830-1835. He settled in Baltimore, Maryland, and was variously employed there for the rest of his life, as a basket maker and a Brewer of beer.

George Alphonse Keller married Elizabeth Agnes Nugent on July 6, 1864, in St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Baltimore. The Rev. B. J. McManus officiated.
