A lifelong resident of his beloved town, Borges was active in the local community and the political arena of Bristol, Rhode Island for his entire life. He is a World War II Veteran of the US Navy Armed guard. One of his many notable contributions is his years of service with the Bristol Volunteer Fire Department, first for many years as a trusted member then serving as a memorable and effective Fire Chief from 1971 until he retired from the Fire Department in 1984. Borges always maintained that the true asset to his success of being chief was entirely contributed to his men who served in the volunteer force with him. The son of Portuguese immigrants from the Azores, he worked in the family business, Empire Bottling Company until the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife and two children as well as five grandchildren.
An "indescribable character", he is immortalized through his community support and service and love for his family and friends. His passion was collecting model trains and voicing his opinion on anything and everything. His funeral service was a fitting tribute: he received full military honors and in lieu of a hearse he rode his "last ride" on the back of a 1930's fire engine.Local businesses lowered their flags to half mast as the cortege, which also included fire apparatus from several communities, passed through the waterfront streets. At the conclusion of the graveside service the engine hand bell was rung, a signal that was used to "call the men back home". Few who knew him could ever forget him. His true epitaph should have read, "His bark was worse than his bite."
