Family note:
His name is James Harrison Hanes not John H Hanes. The reason both names are on the tombstone is because they are buried on top of each other because he had been married before and she wanted to be buried the closest to him. The first wife Lucy Buckner Lowry is also buried near by. I have been to that cemetery years ago. It was in the middle of a corn field at that time belonging to a Mr Johnson, a friend of the family.
John Harrison Hanes (1805-1887) my gg-grandfather married Margaret T. Stephen (1800-1880). They had James Harrison Hanes ( 1840-1887) my g-grandfather. He married Lucy Buckner Lowry (1845-1869) m 26 Dec 1867. She died March 1, 2 years later. Her brother died March 30, 1869 the same year. There was probably a flu type illness going around since they died so close together.
29 Dec 1874, James Harrison Hanes married his second wife Mary Eliza Ellett 1851-1899. They had 6 children. Their second child was my grandfather, James Benjamin Hanes, He married May Lee Killian. They had 11 children, my mother was the second child. Katheryn Ellett Hanes Gammon.
Lucy Buckner Lowry Hanes died 1869. She was buried in the Johnson family cemetery in the middle of a corn field. The Johnsons were family friends of my G Grandfathers, James Harrison Hanes and allowed him to bury her in their cemetery. When James Harrison Hanes died, he was buried beside Lucy. Mary Eliza Ellett Hanes, the second wife was said to be jealous of Lucy. Before she died, she requested to be buried on top of JH Hanes so she would be the closest to him, the reason for them sharing a tombstone. This is the story told to me by Mr Johnson, many, many years ago. He was still living on the farm. He was a distant relative.
James Harrison Hanes worked for the C&O railroad. He got caught between two cars and lost a leg, putting the family into difficult times. C&O felt bad for the family, so gave my grandfather, James Benjamin Hanes a job with the railroad in Buchanan, VA as a telegraph operator for the railroad. He met my Grandmother, May Lee Killian in Buchanan.
