Shot and killed by Constable Mart Vowell in the Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector, AR. Vowell claimed that Lovejoy was seeking revenge because Vowell had once arrested him, and the two had exchanged gunfire on previous occasions. On August 12, 1903, Vowell shot Lovejoy twice with a shotgun and then shot him in the head with a pistol. Vowell was convicted of first-degree murder and hanged on the grounds of the Greene County Courthouse in Paragould, AR, on June 9, 1904. Both Vowell and Lovejoy are buried in Woodland Heights Cemetery, where the fatal shooting occurred, and their graves are located within 150 feet of each other.
