Thursday 1 August 1940:

“Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Kern Coleman, 79, former resident of this community, who died Thursday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Mackie, Cleveland, were held Saturday afternoon at the Fredlock Funeral Home on Lyons Street. Interment was made Sunday morning in Philos Cemetery. Rev. J. H. Bean officiated.

Pallbearers were John Munsie, Ray L. Wilt, George Boyles, E. J. Cheshire, Charles Grove and John F. Rose.

A daughter of the late Philip and Nancy (Leatherman) Kern, Mrs. Coleman was born in Fort Ashby. When she was fifteen years old the family moved to this community. Her marriage to Francis Alvey Coleman took place in 1880.

About twenty-one years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Coleman moved to Mallet Creek, Ohio. Mr. Coleman died September 9, 1923 in Cleveland, and the body was brought here for interment. Since that time Mrs. Coleman made her home with her daughters in Cleveland and Steubenville.

Besides Mrs. Mackie, she leaves another daughter, Mrs. Fannie Redman, Steubenville, Ohio; one son, Edward Coleman, Endwell, N.Y.; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth ‘Liccie’ Lawrence, Baltimore, and two brothers, Manuel Kern, Westernport and William D. Kern, Piedmont.

Persons from out-of-town attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Donald Robertson, Cleveland; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Redman, Steubenville; Mrs. Elizabeth Lawrence, Baltimore; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Coleman and children, Francis, Beverly and Lewis Coleman, Groton, N.Y.
